Open the book Feb 18 (1)

As Open the Book Awareness Week is 11-18 February 2018, it seems appropriate to make you aware of what Open the Book is and what the GAP Open the Book teams have been up to.

Open the Book is part of GAP's outreach to our local schools. We have two teams who are involved with collective worship in five of our primary schools. Through this, we have built up very positive relationships. We are given a warm welcome by both staff and pupils. The children enjoy participating in the presentations and we have received some very pleasing and encouraging feedback from our visits. Of course this is not all one-way. Being a member of the team presenting the stories is enjoyable and rewarding. As is stated in the Open the Book aims, we are helping "to contribute to the biblical literacy of each new generation" and improving our own knowledge of, and insight into, the Bible too.

Each session begins with a brief introduction, to set the story in context, before we open the Bibles to show where the story comes from and just what the book is. The story is presented in a lively, dramatic way with the children being involved in the telling. After the story there is an opportunity for guided reflection. This is followed by a short closing prayer which the children are invited to make their own. Open the Book presenters are required to stick rigidly to the given script. This has been prepared to ensure that the material can be used in a Christian or multi-faith context.

In January some members of our team, together with some children from the Butts Primary School, visited the Library club for more senior citizens. We wanted to demonstrate our work in schools to the club members. We presented the story of Elijah and the Ravens to our audience, whose age range spanned 100 years. All those present enjoyed the story and, led by 'Russell Crow', provided enthusiastic caws and flaps whenever the ravens got a mention.

Can you spot Russell and Elijah in this photo?
