Working together -opportunities to get involved
The Stewards have prepared a list of activities within the church that need a few more volunteers to help make them run smoothly. We hope they also offer an opportunity for everyone who'd like to have a specific role, but doesn't have one, to get involved. We want everyone to feel included in the life of the church, especially this year when we all need to do what we can to maintain the momentum of all God's work in our church and in the community at large.
The list is below and the names and contact numbers of the organisers are given. There's also a box in church in which you can leave your details if you're interested in taking on a role but would prefer not to contact the organiser. The stewards will check the box and you will be contacted by a steward or an organiser, as appropriate. Also, if you have any suggestions of jobs which need to be done in the church you can put them in the box, with or without your name.
If you'd like to help with an activity or find out more before you commit please either contact the relevant organiser or approach one of the stewards. The stewards' phone numbers are: Di Wright 01420 86366, Lin Fitch 01420 544763/07765 450260, Helen Wallace 01420 84689/ 07780 673584 and Debby Bridger 01420 86910.
Finally, if you organise an activity in the church which we haven't mentioned and you could do with more helpers then please let one of the Stewards know and we'll make sure it gets included.
€ Readers for Sunday Services — if you would be willing to read at any of the services please put your name on the list on the notice board in the foyer. We had a good response to the same appeal last year but are still short of readers, particularly for the 10am and 10.45 services. Contacts: any of the Stewards
€ Sunday coffee rota — a few people have had to step down recently so a few new volunteers would be welcomed. If you could help please contact Di Wright 01420 86366
€ Door Stewards for Sunday Services- the greatest need is for the 10.45 service. Please contact Ron Wood 01420 89366
€ Sunday Organiser Stewards — this is not the full steward's role but is nevertheless an important one. Sunday organisers arrive early, get the church ready for the service, pray with the preacher and read the notices. There's no advance preparation or planning required. Contacts: any one of the Stewards (phone numbers listed above)
€ Communion Stewards — a few more people are needed to help prepare the Communion elements, manage movement of the congregation to the altar, and clear away afterwards. Contact: Di Wright 01420 86366
€ Leaders for Own Arrangement Services — would you be able, perhaps with another person or a group, to lead one of the Own Arrangement services? If so Jennie Marlow would love to hear from you. Contact : Jennie Marlow 01420 85698
€ People to Count the collection on a Sunday evening after the service — we have only a handful of counters and a few more would lighten their load. Contact: Any of the Stewards
Work with Children and Young People
€ Lighthouse — more people to go on the rota to run Lighthouse sessions for the children at the Sunday 10.45 service would be very welcome. Scripture Union teaching material is used so preparation is not difficult. Contact: Judy Nicholls 01420 89956
€ Boys' Brigade — help is badly needed in Junior Section (ages 8-11) and would also be welcome for Anchor Boys (age 5-8). Regular help each week would be ideal but any help at all would be welcome. Help could come from someone from another church or someone else who has experience of working with children. Membership of Alton Methodist Church isn't a requirement but it should be noted that BB is a Christian organisation. Contact: Dan Ryan (Junior Section) 07725 025225 or Glenda Bentley (Anchor Boys) 01420 85987
€ Girls' Brigade — help is always welcome, whether it be weekly or fortnightly. The criteria for a helper is the same as for Boys' Brigade. Contact: Kym Burgess
€ Lunch Club — as explained in Christine's article in the July/August newsletter, there's a need for people to serve the lunches and help clear up after the meal. Lunch club takes place on the 2nd and 4TH Tuesdays of the month. Help just once a month or at both sessions would be welcome. Help with preparation during the morning would also be welcome, whether regularly or from time to time when regular helpers are away. Contact: Christine Allan 01420 84739
€ Light cleaning, dusting etc. Contact: Christine Allan 01420 84739
€ Providing and / or arranging flowers for the Sunday Services. There is a fund for the flowers and contributions to this are always welcome, too. Contact: Janet Meager 01420 82626
€ Drivers for Library Club — (See also article in the July/August newsletter)
The Library Club for older people in Alton takes place on the second Wednesday afternoon of each month. The club is a GAP initiative and important for many of the members. Some people rely on being picked up by minibus and wouldn't be able to attend without this. It would be very helpful to have more minibus drivers able to help with this. If you have D1 on your licence you're entitled to drive a minibus and David Allan will provide training for this if you need it. Contact: David Allan 01420 84739
€ Website publisher — now that Keith has moved on we could do with someone to replace him. Publishing of information on the website is generally quite a simple process. Contact: Helen or Peter Wallace
€ Creating the Powerpoint slides for the Sunday Services — from time to time help is needed, mainly for the 9.15 service. Training will be provided. Contact: Liz George 01420 88721
If you organise an activity in the church which we haven't mentioned and you could do with more helpers then please let one of the Stewards know and we'll make sure it gets included.
