For those who are too young to start Duke of Edinburgh's Award, but would like the excitement of going on an expedition, the Church runs a "Young Venturers" group. Led by DofE trainers, it's for boys and girls in School Years 7 and 8, and aims to teach some of the skills necessary for navigating in the local countryside.
Map reading, First Aid and Safety are covered indoors in several evening sessions, and the groups then go for a short practice walk with an accompanying adult. Following this, the Year 7s are expected to plan and undertake a one-day, seven-mile expedition — supervised but unaccompanied. The Year 8s will be expected to cover ten miles in the day, and they have the added adventure of camping overnight.
Certificates are awarded on completion, and the young people should now be well equipped to take up the wider challenge of the Duke of Edinburgh's Bronze Award in School Year 9.
